I appreciate that some men find it difficult to open up to a female counsellor, and that a male counsellor gives the opportunity to speak man to man.
Our society puts a lot of pressure on men to be strong, to put on a brave face, and we are told as youngsters that ” big boys don’t cry”. Fortunately some of these stereotypical views are finally being broken down.
Men are more likely to use negative coping strategies, and self medicate, with alcohol /drugs. These are more likely to compound the problem, and seeking someone to confide in is a first step in breaking the cycle.
I have been particularly effective dealing with men who have had significant problems.
